Social Annotation in the Age of AI

Last modified date

I’ve been following how Hypothes.is is responding to the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT. I appreciate that Hypothes.is is leaning into the practice of social annotation as a way to support the academic processes of reading, thinking and writing now that students can also access ChatGPT. In fact, the resources shared below help to illuminate how engaging with ChatGPT alongside social annotation may help students engage even more deeply with their own reading, writing and thinking, as well as those of their peers and with the chatbots themselves.

Also, many people have been publicly annotating articles online using the ChatGPTedu hashtag in Hypothes.is. That list of articles is a reminder about how social annotation can be used as a tool to help us make sense of what it means to read, write and think in this new age of AI.
